ABOUT THIS UNIT

Cushing's / Taylor's Battery (formed in 1997) is a military re-enacting organization, organized for the purpose of advancing the awareness and knowledge of the Civil War (1861 to 1865) and American History.

We portray a regular Union Army Civil War Artillery Battery (4th US Battery A) and also the life of civilians during that time.  We also portray a Confederate Artillery Battery (Taylor's Battery) out of Virginia attached to Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of  Northern Virginia and the life of the civilians during that time.

We are a nonprofit corporation  recognized in the State of Pennsylvania and currently applying for our 501(C)(3)  Federal Non Profit and hope to have it by the end of the year 2004.  Any donations or contributions  to Cushing's/Taylor's Battery  will be tax deductible  and are greatly appreciated to help us continue to educate others about our history.

We are always looking for people interested in becoming a member.  If you are interested in the American Civil War, enjoy camping, and like family oriented activities, this hobby may be for you.  Anyone interested in joining the Battery should contact a member of the Battery or send an E-mail to the address listed below.  Our battery members come from all walks of life and the will be glad to talk with you about their hobby and what it takes to join.  They also will be glad to show you their equipment, clothing, and battery items.  We participate in activities year round and do from 10 to 15 events of various types a year.

All activities are carried out in the authentic uniforms and accouterments of an Artillery Battery in the American Civil War.  We also have a variety of civilian impressions with the framework of the American Civil War.  these would include a Newspaper reporter, Preacher, School Teacher, Cooks, Laundresses, and Sanitary Commission, all in authentic clothing and accessories of the period.  Our civilian members also participate in all re-enactments and education activities with the battery.

The Battery currently operates one reproduction 1861 Three Inch Ordnance Rifle and one 1861 Limber on the filed, which costs in excess of $18,000.00 and is privately owned.  As of 2003 we had an annual operating budget of more than $4000.00.
